[vtkusers] Java, VTK, and XFree & Mesa OpenGL Problems

I have looked at a few examples of how to use VTK within Java from
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/~heiland/vtk/. These examples differ from the
one included with VTK itself by using vtkPanel instead of
vtkRenderWindow. This difference seems to make the use of menus and
other Java interfaces items easier. All these examples, if they use
vtkPanel or not, work fine on a Linux machine using XFree 3.3.6, but a
problem shows up on a XFree 4.0.1 machine with a Voodoo 3 card. The
examples that use vtkPanel display "strange internal surfaces" while
the examples that do not use vtkPanel do not. A head-on view is fine
but as soon as the object is rotated these odd lack of/extra areas
appear. Other than the hardware and which XFree version is being used
these machines are the same, running IBM JRE 1.3, and Oct2 snapshot of
VTK.

Is this a known problem with vtkPanel? Is there a work around? Can
a person integrate Java swing and VTK without vtkPanel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Thanks!
