[vtkusers] vtk w/ java

Below is a link to a page describing native rendering into a Java Canvas.
This is accomplished by overriding the paint() method at the native level.
Has anyone investigated this with vtk?  I ask because the method getPeer()
is deprecated in Java 1.3.  Perhaps there's another solution to this?
