Getting a 24 bit window

Under Windows-NT with OpenGL and 24 bit display I seem to automatically get 
a 24 bit vtkRenderWindow.  However, on my Sun (Solaris 2.5.2 with MESA) I 
seem to get a 16 bit window even though the X-Window configuration 
(m64config) is setup for 24 bits.  How can I specify that vtkRenderWindow 
should use a 24 bit window?  (This is vtk 3.1.1 on both systems)

renWin GetDesiredDepth returns 24
renWin GetDepthBufferSize returns 16
