[vtkusers] pipeline problem?

On and off, I have noticed this:

In my application I build the pipeline in the constructor and feed it
the input data through the application
menus (read a datafile,  and then feed it to the top fo the pipeline)..
this has worked for the most part.
Now, I am seeing a problem where I think the pipeline (which at the
other end is an interactor) is trying
to execute, as soon as the interactor is initialized. With no data, it
dies.

As I said, this is not happening consistently on all similar
applicatoins I have built (all of them use  XT/Motif for
the interface and XRenderWindow classes). On Sgi..
