vtkButterflySubdivisionFilter ?

Hi

Browsing some Tcl examples, I launched
vtk/graphics/examplesTcl/subdivide*.tcl. Quite nice and fairly clear
examples, but here is a *naive* question : what is
vtkButterflySubdivisionFilter exactly for ? :) It performs a kind of 3D
smoothing while adding subdivisions, but could someone give me some
insights regarding its "concrete" applications (no pun intended of course,
but I may have missed something) :)
