You should try installing the RPMs from
ftp://public.kitware.com/pub/vtk/nightly

The ones you want are
vtk-nightly.i386.rpm
vtk-tcl-nightly.i386.rpm

and, if desired, possibly
vtk-examples-nightly.i386.rpm
vtk-devel-nightly.i386.rpm
vtk-python-nightly.i386.rpm
vtk-java-nightly.i386.rpm

These work fine under RedHat 6.2, and should also work under 7.0.
To install them, log in as root and type

rpm -U vtk-nightly.i386.rpm vtk-tcl-nightly.i386.rpm

Using RPMS will also make it very easy for you to upgrade to
VTK 3.2 when it comes out.

I'm still using RedHat 6.2, because experience has taught me that
that the X.0 versions of RedHat are generally have a few bugs or
other issues. The RedHat X.2 releases are always rock-solid stable.
