image 2 shows normal terrain with some data mapped onto scalars, image 1 is
the zoomed in version where the artefacts are evident.

The black regions vary greatly, a slight movement of the zoom and the whole
image changes. The image I've shown is nice because it illustrates the
regular pattern you get - regular chunks of blacked out stuff.
