Problems compiling any vtk 2.1 example under Linux.

Hello there vtk-wizards!

    I am new to this list and to vtk. I have a great deal of trouble
compiling the C++ examples provided with the vtk distribution. I was
glad to have found a rpm for the precompiled vtk-libraries, since
building them from source code was not possible due to a seg-fault on
execution of targets.make. These 'targets.make' files all have 0 length.

Now trying to compile only the example programs does not seem to be any
more painless :( I get a:

    If this does look familiar to you, I would like to hear from you! I
have to admit I have only very little knowledge of C++. I only know my
ways around C.
