Contouring StructuredGrid

I'm trying to apply vtkContourFilter to a vtkStructuredGrid, but it just
complains that there is no data to contour!

.. the strange thing is that I have actually done this to the exact same
data a while ago, but I can't remember how I did it.

Can anyone please tell me what magic I must perform to make this work?
