vtk & linux --- XIO: fatal IO Error 0

hello,

i am having trouble getting vtk to work on my linux machine. i
configured it with "--with-mesa --with-shared --with-tcl
--with-python --with-tkwidget" and compilation ran smoothly with
 egcs-1.1.2. however, i can't get the examples to run at all.

further symptoms: if i just start up ./tcl/vtk then i get an
empty tk window and the usual "%" tcl prompt, but when i try to
move the window arround the screen, the whole things dies with
the following cryptic message:

  XIO: fatal IO Error 0 (Success) on X server ":0.0"
  after 62 requests (61 known processed) with 0 events remaining

other information which may be helpful: i'm using vtk-2.4,
tcl-8.0 and tk-8.0.

has anyone experienced similar problems or have an idea what the
problem might be?
