Hi Charles, 

I concur.  It would be very nice to see this changed before 3.0,
and I would be willing to patch a few regression tests to help 
it happen. 

It should also be clearly stated in both vtkImageMapper.h and
vtkImageViewer.h why the values 255.0,127.5 are special, i.e.
that they allow direct display of 8-bit greyscale and RGB data.
Some of VTK's own regression tests make the mistake of
using SetColorWindow(256.0)!  
(Yeah, it is nitpicking, but medical physicists are paid to
be picky ...)
