Sorry to be a pedant, but it's not gcc, it's llvm-gcc. :)  A Frankenstein of the gcc frontend and the LLVM backend, created as a hack before clang supported C++.  It was discontinued years ago.

I'm curious: why?

What version of Xcode are you using?  It probably has clang also.
