Welcome to VTK!

The best process would be to follow the contribution guide[1] and submit
your change for review.  This will make it easier to review the changes and
get integrated into the main distribution.

Do you have a .ply that can be shared for testing along with the change?
Ideally your contribution would include a test to verify the reader now
correctly accepts this additional .ply file.
