I have not tried.  But I think, as part of keeping the VTK 5.x branch on life support, that it should continue to be build-able against new compilers/C++ libraries/OS SDKs/etc.

There was talk of setting up a 5.x branch and getting gerrit and stuff working with that, was it done?  Once it is, I can dig through git logs and find which commits should be backported, actually I guess I could start digging those up now...
