FYI,

The VisIt project is going forward with our VTK upgrade by resurrecting 
mangled Mesa off of the 5.8 branch.  After we got in there and started 
looking at things, we've decided to take a slightly different route than 
what was there before -- OSMesa is mangled and mangled non-OSMesa is 
just not supported (though it probably won't get properly removed right 
now).

We are getting fairly close to getting our tests to pass with the new 
VTK.  Once we do, I'll rebase on top of current 5.8, try to clean things 
up a bit, and submit a proper gerrit branch.  However, we invite early 
review and comments nonetheless:
