[vtk-developers] VTK Examples broken outside of tree

Hi Bill,

This commit you made in December:

broke examples like vtkLocal such that they do not build anything
when built outside of the VTK tree.  It also undid a purposeful
feature from

  http://vtk.org/gitweb?p=VTK.git;a=commitdiff;h=fe7fc7e9

which was intended to ensure that all examples *always* build
correctly outside of the tree.  Before that we had way to many
problems with examples that only worked in-tree and failed when
copied outside VTK.

Why was this change (un)made?
