I think VTK 5.4 is feature-frozen already.
In any case, there would be a lot of changes involved to have VTK 
support Unicode everywhere it accepts text (especially with respect 
to the text rendering pipeline), so I don't think that would/should 
go in 5.4...
But it's good news anyway.
