Hi all,

Mathieu and I have reviewed his patch, and I have just committed it. 
This should fix/improve bugs 2238, 4170, 5775, 5776.  Hopefully their
originators will confirm.

Someone on vtk-users also pointed out that this code calls 'exit(-1)' on
error.  Of course, this terminates the process, loosing any unsaved
work.  What should it do instead?  What is VTK's preferred error
handling mechanism?
