Yes, Macs are a different story.

Apple developers their own OpenGL drivers in order to support all of
the graphics cards they sell well (and they do a good job of that),
however; this is also why GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE returns an artificially
low value and will continue to do so for a few years to come.
