[I for one have never been bitten by any problem about downstream 
references in all my time using vtk - and in fact added (and used very 
frequently) UnregisterAllOutputs specifically so that the pipeline could 
be disconnected and partly destroyed whilst keeping some latter part 
that was still required. I've had to make quite a lot of changes to my 
code because this function was removed (without warning I note <grumble 
grumble>).]
