[vtk-developers] Data structures in VTK (Implementation)

This has probably been discussed several times before, but I am a newbie
on this, so please excuse me.

I can see that the VXL toolkit (vxl.sourceforge.net) has made vcl, which
is a C++ compatibility layer, which should enhance the portability of the
standard library. 

Do any of you have any experience with that? Is there obvious reasons why
such an approach is not worth following?
