OK, with all of the very good, simple explanations, I get it.  Nice feature.  Why isn't it enabled by default?  I.e., why do you need to load the optional plugin?

Here is an image I created with the help of Surface LIC.

Ah, yes, that's correct. That was changed a long time ago to just mask out regions with zero velocity rather than showing noise, which I believe it did in its initial incarnations.
