[Paraview] Pick object

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what the pick object button on the ParaView GUI does. I have been hunting around for documentation, but searching both the wiki and inline PV documentation turns up no references. Can anyone tell me how to use it properly or point me to missed documentation? The button seems to do nothing for me no matter how I try to use it.
