I don't think there is a way to do it currently, for the reason you
pointed out. The widget visibility is not controlled by a property of
the representation as it probably should be. I'm not sure if there is
a bug report/feature request filed for this already.
If the rendering is local, you can do an evil hack like this...
GetRenderView().GetRenderWindow().GetRenderers().GetFirstRenderer().GetViewProps().GetItemAsObject(6).SetVisibility(0)
Render()
