We've had a number of problems with some of the newer nvidia drivers and some commercial software (crashes, mouse events getting lost, etc).

We hadn't any luck with any of the newer 185 driver series, but have a working configuration with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.18 driver that behaves normally. You might try fiddling about with that too - it might not just be openmpi causing issues.
