[Paraview] Can't connect any more in pv3

I've been using pv3 all day long to connect using reverse connection to
an mpi spawned server, then I though I'd save myself some fiddling, by
entering the command into the configuration dialog for the connection so
that paraview client would
ssh machineX mpirun -hostfile /users/biddisco/build/pv3/bin/pvserver -rc
--client-host=machineA
etc etc
It worked ok the first time, then I fiddled some more and now despite
deleting all servers, removing the paraview .config file, reentering
servers the way I've been doing for weeks, I cannot get anything except
this message from the client

ERROR: In
/users/biddisco/code/ParaView3/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModuleConnectionManager.cxx,
line 180
vtkProcessModuleConnectionManager (0x4f69290): Failed to set up server
socket.

ERROR: In
/users/biddisco/code/ParaView3/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModuleConnectionManager.cxx,
line 200
vtkProcessModuleConnectionManager (0x4f69290): Invalid ServerSocket id: -1

I didn't do anything else to the system except change servers - then
delete them and re-enter them. Reverse connection just fils immediately
now, whereas it used to open up the dialog and wait for a connection...

What do the two lines of error above really tell me, and how can I make
them go away. Unless someone has secretly reconfigured the network
whilst I wasn't looking, I cannot imagine why these errors suddenly
appeared.

Clues?

thanks

JB
