I had this too.

I think it's because the binaries are compiled for ppc, not intel

For regular OS X apps, Rosetta kicks in to open ppc binaries, but I  
don't think that happens in X11 apps

For what it's wort, the Paraview III binaries are compiled for intel  
and they work fine
