[Paraview] PV3: Failed to start QT Assistant

When I select Help > Help, a message window comes up "Failed to start Qt
Assistant".  I have verified:

ordinary user> which assistant
/usr/bin/assistant

and this runs ok from the command line.  The relevant bit of source is
around line 799 of Applications/Client/MainWindow.cxx

Running:
Linux onceler 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 #3 SMP Tue Jul 31 11:20:43 UTC 2007 x86_64
Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

with x11-libs/qt-4.2.3-r1.
