[Paraview] How to Change Default Drawing for A VTK File

How can I read a legacy VTK file and not see the surface automatically?

The file is large, unstructured and it takes a long time to generate the surface. I'd rather see the outline.

It seems like the "default" would be changed if I read the data, changed to "outline", and then exited PV so that it could update its defaults file in my home directory. But that had no effect.
