[Paraview] How to Debug ParaView

ParaView is crashing after the logo window has been displayed but before 
the main window is displayed. The logo window cannot be moved or hidden so 
its difficult to see the terminal window. Is there anyway to move this 
window?

The gdb command "generate-core-file" was used to dump things to a file but 
it cannot be used - upon loading, the following error is shown:

warning: svr4_current_sos: Can't read pathname for load map: Input/output 
error

Is there a way to dump ParaView that works?

Is there a way to turn on VTK debug messages? I set the type of generation 
to "DEBUG" in CMake but this doesn't turn on VTK debuging.
