Makes sense.  OK, let me ask this.  Could we/ should we do 2) below in one of the 5.* releases for SC?  And yes, Ken's suggestions for filters/ readers has my support.  Or, am I somewhat rushing things?  It's just that auto apply on is so nice, and if it isn't the default, it doesn't get tested and improved.
