The method we used to import upstream hdf5 didn't preserve your
original commits but it does allow us to update from upstream
quite easily no matter what changes have been made in our copy
or upstream. This is explained in the readme:

 http://vtk.org/gitweb?p=VTK.git;a=blob;f=Utilities/vtkhdf5/README-VTK.txt;hb=v5.10.0

I was not aware anything we need was not brought in. If you
have additional changes that need to be made you're welcome to
submit them through our normal development process:

Google is not the only OpenID provider, but I don't recall
providing a cell phone number for anything.

Step 1 of VTK's Git developer instructions (linked above)
is to register for Gerrit access, and links here:

 http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VTK/Git/Account#Gerrit

Step 1 of the registration process links here:

 http://openid.net/get-an-openid/

There are many providers from which to choose.
