The Institute of Applied Information Technology www.init.zhaw.ch at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, Switzerland www.zhaw.ch is looking for a:

Research Engineer

to support the newly founded Visual Computing Laboratory. 

Within the Visual Computing Laboratory, we are focusing on applied research topics in the area of visual computing, comprised of imaging, image processing, computer graphics and visualization. The goal is to develop novel software solutions by combining advanced image analysis and visualization techniques. Projects are in collaboration with academic and industrial partners, primarily in the medical field. We aim at developing practical solutions to current practical problems. One upcoming project entails developing a software pipeline to provide a 3D image-to-model workflow enabling automated construction of virtual and physical (3D printing) models in order to support image-based modelling. Previous projects in the area of visual computing at our institute include ‘Pipeline for 3D-animation and visual effects studios’ (partner http://www.elefantstudios.ch) and ‘Computer-Based Surgical Simulation of Knee Arthroscopy’ (partners http://www.vision.ee.ethz.ch and www.virtamed.ch).

The successful candidate will:
* Specify and develop software solutions in C/C++, Python, Java, Matlab, etc. primarily in the area of visual computing.
* Take part in research and development activities including dissemination (workshops, conferences, journals), documentation and technology transfer.
* Work in an interdisciplinary environment with academic and industrial partners.
* Support teaching activities, such as preparing and supporting student labs.
* Have a leading role in developing software components in the planned image-to-model pipeline.

Your profile:
* University degree, ideally MSc, in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
* Strong programming skills
* Expert knowledge in image analysis
* Technical know-how in computer graphics
* Experience with image processing and computer graphics software packages and applications, eg. VTK/ITK, openCV, paraview, imageJ
* Innovative, motivated, result driven individual
* Team player with strong communication skills

This is a full-time (100%) position, initially limited to one year with the possibility of extension.
