.gz is a compression format like .zip

.nii is nifti: http://nifti.nimh.nih.gov/nifti-1/

http://pacific.mpi-cbg.de/wiki/index.php/Fiji) with a nifti plugin (
http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/plugins/nifti.html) to view .nii files
