[Insight-users] BARRIERS to OPEN SCIENCE

It is true that scientists are very protective of their research but when a research project ends and the final results are obtained there is no need for further secrecy. The scientist can publish the research and others can use the published material to inspire their own research or just use it for commercial purposes provided that they would refer to the source whenever they use it. The problem is that some tend to hide the practical aspects of their work as others might copy their work as their own. That is where opensource projects come in, although not entirely open but these projects essentially contributed to the science (Take ITK as an example). Now the issue is that how to convert the non-opensource developers to opensource developers, the answer is that non-opensource developers should feel that their work would be more appreciated with the respective credit which they deserve in the opensource community. Considering all the aforementioned
 still I have to admit that sharing is not very much desirable but maybe that is just a mentality that has to change.
