Hi Tom,
 Thanks for the clarification. I should have asked, how would I interpret the color image of deformation field? Is there a color bar that I can look-up to? 
For eg., vector deformation fields could be shown as in this example: http://www.math.uh.edu/~razencot/MyWeb/Research/Cardiac_Echography2.html
or using arrows as shown in "B. Vector plots of total shape change" in http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2202/7/63/figure/F4?highres=y
