Hi Manuel,

You are right. You can read raw images directly. You a few different options:

  1. Convert images to another format, using some other program, for  
instance ImageJ.
  2. Use the itk::RawImageIO class to read the images. You will need  
to set the size, pixel type, etc. yourself.
  3. Use the mhd format. You need to add a header file. Look for the  
sub-header: "Writing a MetaImage header for raw data" in
http://www.itk.org/HTML/Data.htm.

I would go for options 1 or 3 for simplicity, but it is up to you.
