this appears to be caused by the file "metaOutput.cxx" which was  
recently added to the cvs. the file includes "zlib/zlib.h"  which  
works if the internal instead of the system zlib is chosen.  the fix  
is to includes "zlib.h" or perhaps some form of ifdef statements for  
selecting which zlib.h's is more desirable.

the previously suggested hack won't fix the problem. it will instead  
result in the following undefined symbols error
