Mark Dow and Greg Scott:

Probably there are many other applications capable of reading
MetaImage files 
( http://caddlab.rad.unc.edu/software/MetaIO/MetaIO-Introduction.htm )

Andrew Crabb maintains http://www.idoimaging.com
where chances are that you can find more packages 
suitable to your needs.
