The tarballs still extract okay with GNU tar.  There must be some
incompatability in the tar file.  I've replaced the tarballs you
downloaded with ones created on a SUN.  They seem to extract okay on the
SUN and GNU systems.  Please try them again.  The .zip files have windows
newlines in them, so they may not work for you.
