That's a good suggestion that would simplify things. Are you proposing
to make the VNL FFT filter always produce a half output image for real
inputs? I don't object, but just want to be clear what you are
proposing. I think most of the time people will want to operate on the
half images and only use the half-to-full image filter for display
purposes.

No. I was thinking the option would be ignored for complex inputs on
the forward filter and complex outputs on the inverse filter (full
images would always be assumed), but that just makes the code and
documentation more complicated :-)
