I'm not against adding it.  I just want to know why the version
without it does not work for you.  Otherwise we might just be
covering a symptom of something else.

Does it fail in both versions for you?  Are you running it from
the official msysGit prompt?  What is the output of

   ls -l Utilities/Git/git-*

in the shell you're using?
