Hi Matthew,

There is indeed some work going on for implementing
reading and writing of HDF5 files.

Leila Bagdahdi (in cc) from the Sick Kids Hospital in Canada
is working on an implementation of the reader.

You can find additional information on the following page

     http://www.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/software/minc/

Maybe you should join forces with the MINC team in order
to bring this functionality sooner into the toolkit.
