No, MR Scanners can collect slices in any orientation, creating oblique volumes. If test data is needed, I can contribute oblique slices (1000's of them in fact...).

For non-dicom, oblique volumes would be possible. I believe that dicom volumes cannot be oblique. Gantry tilt can be specified for CT, but that is independent of the direction cosines I believe.

What about oblique volumes? They might be rare, but if you compute 3rd
direction from slice origins, you can cover both orthogonal and oblique
volumes. Unfortunately I cannot offer test cases as I only have
orthogonal volumes at hand.
