*Editor-in-Chief: Robert P. Futrelle, USA*

Dear Dr. Aylward,

I would like to introduce the forthcoming journal, /Biological
Knowledge/. The journal will be an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online
journal providing a forum for scientific communication regarding
analysis of the content and the role of knowledge in biology and
medicine. Preliminary information about the journal is available at
www.biologicalknowledge.com

As the amount and complexity of biological and medical research grows,
so does the awareness that the end product of research must be
knowledge, not merely data. Knowledge is much more difficult to
formalize and manipulate than data, yet more and more articles are
published each year dealing with experimental and computational research
focused on the concepts of knowledge per se. The goal of /Biological
Knowledge/ is to provide knowledge-related biological and biomedical
research.

/Biological Knowledge/ looks forward to receiving your submissions.
Researchers interested in submitting a manuscript should contact me at
biologicalknowledge at gmail.com <mailto:biologicalknowledge at gmail.com>.

The information below will provide more information about the journal
and its publisher, BioMed Central
<http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/3/0/>.

Yours sincerely,

Robert P. Futrelle

The Editor-in-Chief, /Biological Knowledge/

------------------------------------------------------------------------

/Biological Knowledge/ will be published by BioMed Central
<http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/1/0/>, the Open Access
publisher. Read on for more information about the reasons to submit
<#whysubmit> to /Biological Knowledge/, the benefits of Open Access
<#OpenAccess>,/ /and how to submit your manuscript <#submit>.

Open Access

/Biological Knowledge/ will be an Open Access journal, which means:

     * All articles are freely and universally accessible online without
any barriers to access, which increases their visibility.
     * All articles can be freely printed, emailed to colleagues, and
posted on the web because of the BioMed Central copyright and
       license agreement
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/13968/0/>.
     * All articles are permanently archived in: PubMed Central
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/26/0/>, the
free-access repository of peer-reviewed research in the life
sciences run by the USA's National Institutes of Health; e-Depot
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/364/0/>, the
National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of electronic
       publications; and Potsdam
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/13969/0/> and
       INIST <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/13970/0/>,
sites archiving the research articles published by BioMed Central
       in Germany and France, respectively.

All articles will be published online immediately upon acceptance (after
peer review) and will be listed in PubMed soon after.

Article-processing charges

To enable the journal to make all of its content Open Access,
/Biological Knowledge / will levy an article-processing charge for each
manuscript accepted after peer review (payable on acceptance). The
charge will be £330 (approximately US$600 or €500, dependent on currency
fluctuations). The fee will be payable by the authors unless their
institution is a BioMed Central member
<http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/80/0/>, but can be
waived in cases of genuine hardship.

When /Biological Knowledge/ is launched, the article-processing charge
on any article submitted within *the first six months will be waived*.

The fee pays for:

     * Administering thorough and fair peer-review

     * Preparing various formats of the manuscript for online publication

     * Securing inclusion in PubMed immediately after publication

     * Immediate, world-wide, barrier-free and permanent access to the
       full text

     * Securing immediate full text inclusion in permanent archives, such
       as PubMed Central
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/26/0/>, Potsdam
       University
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/13969/0/>, INIST
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/13970/0/> and the
       National Library of the Netherlands
       <http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/364/0/>

     * Securing inclusion in CrossRef, which enables references to be
linked directly to their online versions, if available

     * Developing and maintaining electronic tools for submission, peer
       review and publication

/Biological Knowledge/'s publisher, BioMed Central, operates a
membership scheme to enable institutions to remove the burden of payment
from individual researchers. Authors at institutions that are members of
BioMed Central do not have to pay the article-processing charge directly
as it is covered by a payment from their institution. These authors can
submit an unlimited number of articles to /Biological Knowledge/, as
well as to any other journals
<http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/43/0/> published by
BioMed Central. Over 400 institutions
<http://news.biomedcentral.com/t/577354/3646079/80/0/> worldwide have
already become BioMed Central members.

Note that many funding bodies have shown support for Open Access by
explicitly allowing the use of their grants to pay article-processing
charges. These include the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the
US National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the UK National Health Service.
