Bill,

You are right, the images have some speckle-like effect.
I updated the documention of the examples using the
timestep values that Josh suggested for 2D and 3D.

This values of timestep are passed in the command line
to the filter,... where should I update these values ?

I think these examples also need tuning. The smoothed output does not 
look smoothed to me.

The examples are

VectorGradient, VectorCurvature, RGBGradient and 
RGBCurvatureAnisotropicDiffusion filters.
