Julien,

That sounds like a good idea to me.

The synthetic images do not have to be as trivial
as the binary sphere. We could use more elaborate
ones like the 'cake' image that Jim used for testing
the BilateralImageFilter.

I agree with you in that we haven't tested that the
image content is actually being read correctly.

A possible option is to write a short example that
uses the ElliseSpatialObjects to generate an image
that looks like a simplified brain (e.g. rough
components for the skull and two or three blobs
as internal structures.  Then saving this in any
of the formats we want to test.

As you said, we could then test both reading
and writing for correctness.
