For Item 4 - I guess(hope) you mean supporting the pipelining of 
non-image object.   I'd also like to discuss supporting 2D and 3D images 
in the same pipeline.  We have several 2D/3D registration methods/problems.

Regarding masks et al, if we support non-image objects in the pipeline, 
then our spatial objects make excellent masks, representations of 
segmentation results, representations of non-mesh deformable objects, etc.
