Adding the _PTHREADS symbol seems to have the problems we were having with pthreads and STL
containers.

The bad news is that on the SGI you can only use "both" -LANG:std and _PTHREADS if you do not intend
to use any iostreams.

With -LANG:std, you can use STL with the new iostreams. But STL containers are not thread safe.

With _PTHREADS, you can use STL with the OLD iostreams and the STL containers are thread safe.
'Course the old iostreams are not thread safe.

I have only found one discussion on the net identifies this problem. They mention this is discussed
on SGI developers sites. I am trying to track down our developer ID so I can did around. If anyone
else has access to SGI developers site, could you look for a solution for using -LAND:std and
_PTHREADS.
