Hi,
I'm already accepting the idea of using FrameMaker
for the documentation.
but...
just to not let TeX go with the image of being
a primitive system :-)
these are some useful resources for TeX.
The most complete source of information and tools is
"the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network"
http://www.ctan.org
The "not so short introduction to latex"
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf
The "gentle introduction to latex"
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/gentle/gentle.pdf
There is a CD distribution
http://www.tug.org/texlive/index.html
that includes executables for the following platforms
       DEC Alpha OSF/1 (4.0)
       HP9000 HPUX 10.20
       Linux (on Intel Pentium)
       FreeBSD (on Intel Pentium)
       SGI IRIX (6.5)
       IBM RS 6000 AIX (4.2)
       Sun Sparc Solaris (2.7)
Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT (Intel machines)

The set of fonts that are available for public access:
